Almost Adult of the Month Jan Brewer

I realize it’s May but I’ve been busy so let’s retroactively bestow the honor of nut-job crazy adult behavior to Arizona governor Jan Brewer who just signed into law an entire state ban on Planned Parenthood funding. Can I take this moment to let the air out? AHHHHHH! WHAT ARE YOU DOING, JAN BREWER??

Let’s not ignore how in mid-April she deemed that life in the Grand Canyon state is now defined as starting on the first day of a woman’s last period RATHER THAN FERTILIZATION. But let’s talk about that later.

Congrats Governor Brewer, you are April’s Almost Adult of the Month.

Brewer probably doesn’t have a soul, but she very likely has female anatomy that needs to gets checked annually. What are her motives? She’s sure as hell not saving tax payer dollars. Mammograms, pap smears, the like — preventative care from Planned Parenthood would cost her state a lot less money versus intensive late stage treatment like biopsies or chemo or radiation. Republican men at least have (little) penises so they can’t possibly fathom anything lady-part related, but why is this woman trying to deny basic health care for her own gender?

Answer: Because it’s not about money and she doesn’t care if your cancerous tumors go undetected. It’s her crusade to save the unborn. Planned Parenthood performs abortions. And abortions are the most politicized topic in the land and it’s all blowing up in everyone’s faces.

I touched on it briefly in my intro but Governor Brewer is militantly pro-life. In mid-April she signed into law the ridiculously named Women’s Health and Safety Act that defines life as TWO WEEKS before conception. This means if any Arizonan—woman, man, teenager, husband, wife—needs to get the morning after pill after some recreational non-baby-making sex, he or she is so fucking denied because they’d be MURDERING their zygote.

Look, abortions are touchy subjects, and I can see the argument for both sides. Babies are the most wonderfully lovely bundles of joy and I can’t get enough of them. But they need to be born into a family that’s ready to have them. Is that so hard to understand? Saying adoption is an option is just cruel because now a mother/family has to be faced with giving up a child. But that’s not even the point because not everyone goes into Planned Parenthood to get an abortion, okay Jan Brewer??

I happen to love Planned Parenthood. I went to a Jesuit university in California that didn’t give out pills for obvious reasons so my friend took me to PP. That scared college kid with no money was greeted by an extraordinary and compassionate health care staff who did not judge me and gave me a full woman’s health exam and wrapped up an annual supply of birth control pills in a paper bag and tossed in like 50 condoms just for funzies. It did not cost me a cent. Stats all say that most folks actually like Planned Parenthood because they provide basic health care to people who cannot afford health insurance (um, hi!) is a good thing.

I’m so sick of this and it has to stop. Mother Jones wrote an excellent headline in their most recent issue: WTF, GOP. They included a litany of things the Grand Old Party has declared war against: women, ethnic minorities, the socioeconomic underclass, environmentalists, us “snobs” with college degrees, non-Christians/Catholics. Who’s left?? Well, just the neo-cons who determine the laws for the rest of us, and they definitely don’t have our best interests in mind.

Is it November 4th yet? Let’s vote them all out of office. Or just Jan Brewer. She’s gotta go.
